Alcohol & Opioids

MAT or Medication Assisted Treatment is primarily used for the treatment of alcohol and opioid misuse.  Opioids include heroin and prescription pain relievers that contain opiates.  Research shows that a combination of medication and therapy can successfully treat these substance use disorders, and for some people struggling with addiction MAT can help sustain recovery.

“The prescribed medication operates to normalize brain chemistry, block the euphoric effects of alcohol and opioids, relieve physiological cravings, and normalize body functions without the negative effects of the misused drug.” — Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

Health Check

Lifestyle Changes

If you are addicted to alcohol or opioids, medication treatment can reduce problems of withdrawal and craving. These changes can give you the chance you need to focus on the lifestyle changes that lead back to healthy living.

Just as important, treatment helps you address life issues you might have that are tied to the addiction, such as feelings of low self-worth, a bad situation at work or home, or spending time with people who use drugs.

In short, treatment helps you move into a healthy, addiction-free lifestyle—into a way of living referred to as recovery.

MAT

How MAT Works

Medication Assisted Treatment helps you give up the problem substance. It helps you get through withdrawal and coping with cravings. MAT also helps you change addictive thinking into non-addictive, healthy patterns. It can help you move away from other harmful behaviors and substances.

Combined with counseling and behavioral therapies, Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) provides a “whole-patient” approach to the treatment of substance use disorders which could include different forms of behavioral therapy along with medical, vocational, educational, and other assessment and treatment services.
