Impacts of Addiction on the Family
Addiction can affect all parts of a person’s life: their physical health, brain function, emotional well-being, finances, work life and social relationships.
Families and friends are also impacted by loved ones’ substance use problems in various ways:
- grief and depression about the loved ones’ deterioration
- preoccupation with the person using substances
- loss of trust in the person using substances
- attempts to monitor, control and change the person using substances
- conflict and deterioration of family relationships
- denial or minimization of the problem
- withdrawal and social isolation
- difficulties fulfilling regular responsibilities (e.g., work)
- abuse and exploitation by the person using substances
- self-neglect and burnout.
Staging an Intervention

Family Interventions
An intervention is a planned event, created by family and friends of a person struggling with addiction, to help the person realize they have a problem, they need help, and they have support. The aim of a family intervention is to get the substance-using person to agree to entering a treatment program that has been researched and contacted in advance by the family.
Family and friends who want to stage an intervention can make a plan for one on their own, or they can consult with a professional interventionist. This professional will structure the planning process, guide the intervention team, and lead the overall event.
This 5-minute substance use self-assessment helps determine the severity and probability of a substance use disorder. The test is free, confidential, and no personal information is needed to receive the result.
